Hops

The Wine and Hop Shop now has in stock local hops! Two local hop coops, Gorst Valley and Wisconsin Hop Exchange, have supplied us with the finest, freshest hops that you will ever encounter. Harvested in August and September of 2011, these hops were pelletized and packed only two days after being picked. They run $3.50 per ounce and are worth every penny and then some. We'll sell them until we run out. See below for varietal and availability information. Enjoy!

Hops have not always been used in beer. They have been used for over a thousand years, but have become popular only the last 200 years or so. Before that, spruce, sage, ginger and wormwood were used, along with countless other ingredients. Historians believe hops have come to dominate in our contemporary beers because they add antiseptic and preservative qualities to the beer, along with a contrasting bitterness to the malt's natural sweetness. These qualities seem to make the hop admirably suited to its task, making our beer taste as good as it does.

Pellet Hops
Our hop pellets are always of the most recent vintage and are kept frozen and barrier bagged.
