Bottle Corking
Corking wine bottles is not difficult,
though it is sometimes confusing. You can either use straight corks,
the type you pull out of commercial wine bottles, or other types
of corks you put in by hand.
If you use straight corks you have to fit the size (diameter) of
the cork to the type of bottle you have, and use a corker which
can insert that size of cork. It also helps to soak wine corks in
hot water (170ºF) for 2 hours, or cold water overnight.

Wine Corks - Straight
Straight wine corks, sized properly,
will help the wine age and prevent bottles from leaking. The cork
must be larger than the bottle so it fits very tightly. To properly
insert corks soak them in hot water for 2 hours or cold water for
8 hours. They become spongier and easier to compress.
